The Conversion of Saul

Conversion of Paul sketch

I have been reading through Acts over the last couple of weeks and was recently reading about the conversion of Saul in Acts chapter 9.  If you want to check out the story scroll to the bottom of this post.

The story of Saul’s conversion got me to thinking about how the churches I have been apart of in the past talk about conversion.  We used phrases like,

“accepting Jesus into our heart’

“asking Jesus into our heart”

“saying the sinners prayer”

I could go on and on, but my point is this.  We don’t see any of those kinds of things here in Saul’s story.  Saul is going about his daily business of persecuting Christians and in so doing persecuting Jesus himself according to the text, and has a unique encounter with Jesus. Jesus asks him a question about persecution and then sends him on to Damascus blinded where he meets Ananias.  Ananias prays and something  like scales fall from Saul’s eyes. He rises, is baptized and then eats.

There is no mention of Saul accepting Jesus into his heart.  Saul does not say the sinners prayer.  As far as I can tell, Saul had a transformational encounter with Jesus and from then on he lived differently. As I think about it, the same is true with the disciples.  We don’t see the typical churchy language at their conversions either.  There was a call to follow Jesus and they did.

With this in mind, I have these questions that I am currently wrestling through. Does the way we  talk about conversion in the church today match the experiences of conversion in the early church?  Should it match?  Have we added some things that shouldn’t be there?  Are we not talking about things that should be?

1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.4 And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”5 And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.”7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one.8 Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.9 And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying,12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem.14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.”15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized;

19 and taking food, he was strengthened

Superman Classic

Its been awhile since I have loved anything Superman, but when I stumbled upon this, I found myself really enjoying it.  Well Done Robb Pratt.  I hope to see more stuff like this from you. This was brilliant.

I can’t help but wonder if their was a nod to Doctor Who with the phone booth.  I hope so cause that would be pretty cool.

Star Wars Obsessed

My five year old son has a problem.  He has  a serious Star Wars addiction.  Now in the interest of full disclosure, I have a great love for Star Wars myself.  I love watching him enjoy the movies and the games.  I love listening to him talk about the virtues of using a lightsaber over a blaster.  I even love the repetitive statements declaring how awesome the Jedi are.  Its a blast sharing this thing with my son.  It gives us this cool thing that we share in common that serves to build and the father son bonds of affection.  Admittedly, I am grateful to have something in my life like this with my son.

I remember when I was a kid I was really into baseball cards for awhile.  I collected any card I could get my hands on.  Eventually my dad took notice and it became a hobby that we shared.  While sometimes I wondered if it wasn’t his hobby more than mine, I still took comfort in the fact that my dad wanted to do something with me.  He loved me and wanted to connect with me.  I still cherish those times together when we would get a pack of cards and open them with anxious anticipation hoping there would be a rare find in the pack. Most of the time there wasn’t anything special in the pack…it was the time together that meant the most.  I am glad that I have that with my son.

Thanks George Lucas.  Honestly, I never thought I would utter that sentence after seeing the prequels, but it seems appropriate now.  Thanks for creating something both my son and I love.

How the Empire Strikes Back Should Have Ended

It's 7:10 Part 2…

Ok…I think I have found a God lesson in this getting up with the sun thing.   Just to recap, I was up at 6:30 am without the aid of a dog or children…in case you wondered this makes me grumpy.  However, James 1:2-4 states:

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

So here it is…I hate seeing 6:30 so I would consider this a trial of sorts (falling into the trial off many kinds category in verse 2).  So I am going to be transformed by the renewing of mind (Romans 12) and consider this early morning a blessing…a pure joy might be stretching it but that is what God’s Word says so that is what I am going to do.   Not my best scripture application ever, but it is the best I’ve got so far.

If I think of something better through the day I will let you know.

Grace and Peace to you all!

Dancing with David…

I first came across this video at annual conference this past June (for those of you who are not United Methodists a yearly gathering for us United Methodists in Grove City).  For whatever reason, this video has stuck with me.  I am not sure if it is the music, the dancing, the feeling of global community, or the beautiful backgrounds.  Take a look and enjoy.

I guess when I see this video I am reminded of David who danced before the Lord with all his might:

14 David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might

I can’t remember the last thing I did with all my might…especially in regards to the LORD.  How often do we allow others perceptions from hindering us doing something with  all of our might, even when others will undoubtedly think it is silly?  May we will all be willing to dance for our LORD and look a little silly and do it with all of our might so that He might be glorified.  Maybe dancing isn’t your cup of tea (it is certainly not mine), but a little risk in some area of each of our lives for Jesus is a good thing, especially when it brings us all together.

Voltron and the Church…

I was having a casual conversation the other day with someone about old cartoons that we loved to watch as kids and talk inevitably turned to one of my all time favorites…Voltron.  If you aren’t familiar with Voltron, check out this clip and you will get the gist:

As you can see, there are five robotic lions that merge together to form a larger robot called Voltron.  Each lion was formidable in its own right, but Voltron’s true power would emerge when the lions would come together to form the larger robot.  I don’t know about anyone else, but I always found this to be a terrific way to think about how the church should function.  The church can only be the church as it is called to be when we are willing to bring all of our individual gifts and talents (really all of who we are) and offer them to God.  It is certainly nice when someone is willing to step in and do the work for us, but the church doesn’t work as it should until all of the parts come to together and are working in harmony with each other.  I know its a little out there, but I think we can learn something from Voltron.  Alone, we can certainly be formidable, but the church is meant to function in community and work as a body does.  Without each others contributions, we can’t realize our full potential as the Church.
